The Social Media in Real Life
Last night as I was lounging around the house making sure my couch remained firmly planted on the ground and enjoying the beginning of the long weekend ahead. I came upon this video on You Tube that completely caught me off guard.
It was shot at this year Sasquatch Festival at the Gorge in George, WA. and what initially caught my eye was that it had received over 1,794,782 views and over 8,000 ratings. So I thought I would check it out. I pressed play and at first glance you see “That Guy” that I think all of us have seen a million times at any concert no matter the genre. “Buddy” dancing by himself, oblivious to anything or anyone around him. It’s almost as if he’s in a trance, most often then not under the influence of some foreign substance, but that is beside the point.
What blew me away was how this seemly innocent dance stupor this kid was in turned into one of the coolest flash (dance) mob I have ever seen and more importantly how this video paralleled what so many companies are trying to do within Social Media and interactive marketing.
Searching for the ingredients, the recipe, for that one “idea virus” that just takes on a life of its own. An idea so contagious its virility is uncontrollable and anyone that comes in contact is powerless to its effects. I think this video is a perfect example of that “virus”.
The video is slow to start but around the 1:10 point the “virus” takes hold and at the 1:40 mark it’s a complete outbreak…..awesome!
I think it shows how the simplicity of a movement combined with the power of community can be a very valuable and viral partnership.
“One man(idea) can start a movement.”

Update: Just noticed this was posted on Seth Godin blog months ago so kind of ironic I mentioned him in the post. So if you haven’t seen this video yet enjoy.
